Some rain overnight and it is cold in the morning. We decided to take a whale watching, iceberg trip this afternoon, so we dressed in as many layers of clothing that we had. I was glad that I brought my winter coat and long underwear.
We drove back up to L'Anse aux Meadows to see a living history site called Norstead, depicting a Viking Village and Port of Trade. I don't think I mentioned yesterday, the saying that all Vikings are Norsemen but not all Norsemen are Vikings. Vikings were the raiders and plunderers. Norsemen not so much. This was a very interesting living museum. The characters were quite informative. In the Chieftan
's house, we got to sit in the seats of honor. What a hoot! The most amazing part of the village was the full scale replica of a Viking ship. Large
r than you thought, but smaller than you would want to sail in across the Atlantic. The Vikings liked to go no farther than two days without sight of land. So they sailed near the Faeroe Islands to Iceland to Greenland to Baffin Island and down the coast of Labrador to Newfoundland. There is some thought that they went farther, but no proof so far. After lunch we went out on a whale watching and iceberg tour, since the locals feel that St. Anthony is the iceberg capital of Newfoundland. We headed out towards a huge iceberg. On the way there we saw various s
eabirds including puffins and gannets. The berg was really big and we circled it to the theme from "Titanic" playing over the loudspeakers. Then we headed back in search of whales, but instead came across several groups of north Atlantic dolphins. They swam along with the boat for quite awhile. No whales were in sight; some disappointed passengers. We were lucky to have seen them in Witless Bay while we were staying in St. John's.
