Sunshine yet again which is ok with us. Before taking the trailer down we drove to Bonavista to see the “Matthew”, a reproduction of the ship John Cabot sailed from Bristol, England to Newfoundland in 1497. The building/museum was built so the ship could be moved indoors in the winter in a dry dock, giving the museum folks an opportunity to do educational programs all year round. It is amazing that a ship that small, with 19 or 20 men aboard could sail across the Atlantic without the modern conveniences our sailers have today. There were actually two boats built; one in England that was sailed
across for the 500th anniversary and the second, built right in Newfoundland, is the one we saw today.
John Cabot went back to England and go permission to sail back with 6 ships. Of the 6, one turned back to England and the other 5 were lost. A sword was recovered in Newfoundland that was identified as Cabot’s, but no one knows what happened to him and the 5 ships. At the 500th anniversary, even the Queen made an appearance in this small coastal town.
We hooked up the trailer and took a very scenic
route back to the TCH(Trans Canada Hwy). Lots of views of small inlets and coves. It wasn’t too far to Terra Nova. We set up and headed out for a walk along the coast of Newman Sound. We walked about 2km out to a dock and and back again. It was good to stretch our legs, but we didn’t see any of the eagles that lived along the shore.
